1.1 What the Assessment Is - and What It Is Not
The communication assessment has two halves. The spoken half lasts about thirty minutes and contains six task types: reading sentences aloud, listening and repeating, short question and answer, jumbled sentence assembly, story retelling, and speaking on a topic. The written half lasts about thirty minutes and centres on one workplace email, with some candidates also reporting short grammar-fix and fill-in-the-blank items. Every spoken answer is one-shot: you get roughly twenty to thirty seconds per answer, and there are no re-attempts.
The spoken half is scored by software, not by a human examiner. That single fact should reshape your whole strategy. A human listener forgives a missed word if the meaning survives; an automated engine only scores the signal it can measure - the words it recognises, the pace you produce them at, the silences between them. You are not trying to impress anyone. You are trying to produce a clean, continuous, correctly-shaped stream of English at a steady pace for thirty minutes.
Equally important is what this assessment is not. It is not an interview, so there are no trick questions and no right opinions. It is not a written grammar exam, so nobody sees your spelling - but every grammar mistake you speak does reach the score. And it is not an accent test: a neutral, clearly articulated Indian English accent scores perfectly well. What loses marks is unclear articulation, broken pacing and silence, wherever they come from.
